International Consultant in Research Ethics and Research Integrity
Mark is Executive Director at AHRECS and an international consultant specialising in research ethics, research integrity and governance. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (United Kingdom).
He has held senior academic leadership and professorial appointments at Flinders University, the University of Western Australia and Murdoch University, including service as Dean (Learning and Teaching). His career spans research, teaching, academic governance and system‑level policy development across multiple jurisdictions.
Awards and Recognition
Mark has received major national and international awards for teaching and research, including Australia’s Prime Minister’s Award for University Teacher of the Year, the Radzinowicz Memorial Prize (British Journal of Criminology), and the Critical Criminologist of the Year Award from the American Society of Criminology.
Research, Grants, and Scholarly Service
He has been awarded competitive national grants from the Australian Research Council, the Criminology Research Council and the Australian Government Office for Learning and Teaching. He has also served as an External Examiner for universities in Hong Kong and New Zealand.
Consultancy Experience
Mark advises governments, research agencies, universities, NGOs and professional bodies on research ethics systems, integrity frameworks and training programs. His consulting spans Australia, Europe and Asia, including work for the European Research Council and the European Commission. He has completed consultancy for Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS), the Federal, New South Wales, Queensland and South Australian Governments and the National Health and Medical Research Council, as well as a range of universities and other higher education institutions, NGOs and professional associations in Australia, Hong Kong, Ireland, Kazakhstan, Taiwan, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.
Mark also acts as a senior consultant on higher education governance, policy and academic development, evaluation, and learning and teaching matters with Higher Education Evaluation & Development (HEED) Consulting.
