PROFILE
Kim has extensive experience in human research ethics, animal ethics and research integrity and governance.
Her early career as a speech pathologist introduced her to the research ethics area. During this time, she also worked as a research assistant for a medical specialist, where her role included developing and submitting ethics applications for research projects and responding to ethics committee feedback.
She previously worked at the Western Australian Department of Health as Executive Officer for the Confidentiality of Health Information Committee (which later became the Department of Health HREC). This committee oversaw access by researchers to the large Western Australia population datasets.
For the past 16 years, she led the research ethics team at Edith Cowan University (ECU). On joining ECU, she initiated culture change to transition from the prevailing view at the time of ethics as an adversarial process to a more educative, collegial environment. To support this change, she developed resource materials, reviewed and revised ethics application forms, worked with researchers and committee members, and contributed to embedding research ethics education as an essential part of postgraduate research student training.
Kim was also responsible for the conception and development of an in-house IT solution. This system, implemented in 2008, provided an online ethics application and administration/management solution for human research and animal ethics applications.
She was part of the organising committee for the 2013 Australasian Ethics Network (AEN) Conference and the 2012 ANZCCART Conference. She has also presented at several AEN conferences.
Most recently, she completed a secondment to University Governance, which provided an opportunity to increase her knowledge of legal and compliance obligations, risk and audit assurance and high-level strategic decision making.
