We have spoken previously about the serious damage done to science by paper mills. This open access parer, published in November 2022, highlights how dodgy papers from paper mills are corrupting genetic science. Institutions must classify the intentional submission of a paper from a paper mill for publication as a serious form of research misconduct and punish it accordingly. Journals must have robust systems to detect if a submitted paper is from a paper mill. Funding bodies, conference organisers and learned societies have a key role to play in this space.
