Research activists have launched a fresh round of calls for the establishment of a national body to manage complaints of misconduct, saying the current system usually fails the accused, whistleblowers and the public alike.

The calls come as University of Queensland research assistant Caroline Barwood was charged with seven counts of fraud and research fraud in a Brisbane court this week. It follows her boss, and lover, Bruce Murdoch being handed a two-year suspended sentence in March over falsifying research studies, gaining grant moneys under false pretences and a raft of other charges.

David Vaux, a long-time campaigner for a national body to handle complaints, said internal university investigations were often conducted by inexperienced personnel, sought to protect reputations and were plagued by conflicts of interest.
