University of Queensland academic Paul Frijters yesterday was cleared of misconduct charges by the Fair Work Commission, with the university standing accused of a sustained three-year campaign against the prominent economist.
Professor Frijters and a former student Redzo Mujcic were disciplined by the university after conducting a study that found ethnic people were less likely to get a free ride on Brisbane’s public bus system than white people.
The university first claimed the pair failed to gain proper consent from the ethics committee of the university before conducting their survey. Professor Frijters was later demoted over the incident but later reinstated. However, the university stood by its claims of misconduct.
