Professional development

Professional development can be an important component of an institution’s constructive approach to research integrity and human research ethics but it must be complemented by the other activities described in this Our Services section of the AHRECS web site.

The National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research and the NHMRC annual institutional compliance reports require institutions to provide induction training for new members of its HREC, and provide ongoing professional development of members. To meet its requirements with regard to researcher awareness and understanding of the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research, as well as demonstrating a commitment to the culture of the responsible conducvt of research, institutions must conduct research integrity professional development opportunities  for its researchers. These obligations institutions can sometimes struggle to meet.

Institutions that engage in cutting-edge research need research governance and research ethics arrangements that can support that activity.

The AHRECS senior consultants have been working in the human research ethics and research integrity spheres since 1984; which means we have decades’ experience in delivering professional development material and activities in these areas. Our ongoing professional and research activities as well as our work on Research Ethics Monthly ( and the Resource Library ( means our knowledge remains up to date and draws upon the widest possible range of sources.

We have undertaken professional development work for bodies such as the National Health and Medical Research Council, Australian Research Council, Australian Government Office for Learning and Teaching, Australian National Data Service, Australasian Evaluation Society, Federal and State government departments, universities, district health bodies philanthropic agencies and NGOs, private companies, and learned academies. We have facilitated activities in Australasia, East and South-East Asia, North America and Europe – from China to Mauritius, Canada to Vietnam, as well as of course in Australia and New Zealand. The work of our senior consultants has been recognised through significant national and international awards for teaching and research.

AHRECS has experience working with professional staff, Research Higher Degree students, supervisors, Early Career Researchers, as well as very experienced ‘research intensive’ staff.
