This Don Mayne cartoon suggests that Stone Age research was focused on very high impact and very relevant topics.  Reminds us of a very old Billy Connolly bit,

Two wildlife photographers in the Savannah, see that they have been noticed by a group of feeding lions.  One of the photographers drops to the ground to put on some running shoes.
Amused, the other photographer chuckles, “You’re never gonna out run those lions.
“I don’t have to run the lions, I just have to out run you!” The first photographer retorts.
