It is not uncommon to hear researchers ask each other, “Have you ‘done ethics yet’?” by which they mean have you completed/suffered through the form finished/endured the review process and received the magical approval letter? But that’s NOT research ethics. That’s an administrative sliver of a researcher’s ethical role in the design and conduct of a project. The challenge for institutions is how do we make research ethics review a valuable and collegiate feedback process to facilitate research? The answer is not in a form or training, it’s professional development, proportional and timely processes, and building a constructive climate.
