This humorous Don Mayne cartoon touches on a couple of serious points.  1. There is genuine value in involving true lay members of the community in the research and research governance space.  2.  To recruit people other than retirees or semi-retirees, we need to be offering some form of attractive renumeration.  In Australia many jurisdictions have published guidelines in terms of  renumeration that should be offered to community members on committees.  We also need to think outside the box to find appropriate people to serve on our committees, though hopefully not by ambushing our pizza delivery driver with a handful of cash to entice them to serve.
