Most national Human Research Ethics arrangements/codes treat reimbursements and incentives quite differently. Incentives are permissible as long as they are not coercive – especially if they might encourage a person to expose themselves to a risk that they might otherwise avoid. You institutional guidance material should assist researchers to identify the difference between reimbursements and incentives, and to judge whether an incentive is coercive.
