Amongst the spectrum of things people can do with their lives, we might wonder why anyone would choose to participate in a research project. Especially for something like Phase I trials where, by design, a trial is supposed to have therapeutic value. But we need to accept individuals elect to participate for a number of reasons. In some cases, the contribution a participant makes can be a compelling reason for their participation. We need to respect the agency of individuals and the decisions they make.
