A funny cartoon about a Goldberg machine for chasing non-responsive researchers.

Friday afternoon’s funny – A Goldberg machine for chasing non-responsive researchers

We would be pretty alarmed if you were using a Goldberg machine to chase non-responsive# researchers.  AHRECS has worked with several clients to establish processes to chase non-responsive researchers.  Send us an email to enquiry@ahrecs.com if you would like to discuss with us.

Friday afternoon’s funny – Consent matters at least as important as the form

When it comes to recruitment and consent strategies in human research, some research ethics review bodies can focus almost exclusively on the consent form.  In its worst form, such reviews are dominated by discussions about “does it follow the template” and proofreading matters.  While this Don Mayne cartoon is decidedly no woke it touches on matters just as important as the form.

Time pressure.
Humiliation and awareness of participation.
Potential participant’s health and welfare.
The context of the recruitment and how it might influence potential participants.

A funny cartoon about a brain in danger of blowing up after reading a new guideline.

Friday afternoon’s funny – It’s going to blow

No one reasonably expects human research ethics guidance text, policies or rules to be a page-turner.  But by the same token, they shouldn’t leave a reader (whether that be an ethics officer, research ethics committee member or a researcher) feeling as though their head is going to explode.

A funny cartoon about what people, associated with human research are thankful for Thanksgiving Day.

Friday afternoon’s funny – What are people associated with human research thankful for?

We know that Thanksgiving Day is a thoroughly US holiday, but this gave us a giggle, so we thought we’d share.  As we head towards the holidays we hope every institution will be planning social events with the members of their research ethics committees.  We also hope that you are acknowledging the stress and burden upon the wider network of people connected to research ethics reviews at your institution.  Be safe and happy over these holidays, but we will be around working over this period.
