As anyone who has conducted large-scale research knows, participants can sometimes go missing. It can be especially painful when they are a terrific potential source of data that can be especially painful. Chasing down participants who have disappeared and collecting data from them can sometimes seem to be something from a television show about a secret/black operation being conducted by a crack intelligence team. This humorous Don Mayne shows what such a scene might look like.

Friday afternoon’s funny – Who’s watching?

When it comes to the ethical and responsible design and conduct of research, researchers need to be aware multiple sets of standards can apply to their work. There may be multiple bodies overseeing the work. For example, in Australia, all research designs will be under the auspices of the host institution, the NHMRC and the ARC. In the case of clinical trials, they will also be subject to additional guidance from the NHMRC, the TGA, as well as international standards. It is important to remember that the rules and guidance material of the host institution may be an external requirement. Oh, the NHMRC isn’t an alien, in fact, many of them are quite nice and witty people. And that isn’t the implants talking.

Obviously, these tiles are not especially respectful of our researcher colleagues, but they are too familiar for anyone who has served on a research ethics committee or supported a committee.

Perhaps the most pressing of those files will be the source of the human bio specimens, their providence and regulatory compliance. In response the doctor might query whether the FDA has any authority in Germany.

Friday afternoon’s funny – Knife in your back as you go under the bus

Leaders who inspire loyalty and people doing the best they can are ones that always have the back of their team and never throw them under the bus. So pretty much the opposite of what’s shown in this humorous Don Mayne cartoon. Note for future reference, this was perhaps the most obvious research error ever.

Friday afternoon’s funny – Santa visiting a health researcher’s house

Unless a researcher is careful, they can cause harm before a person consents to participate in a project. As pictured in this Don Mayne cartoon, body-shape shaming Santa would be an example of this. This consideration is why Chapter 3.1 of the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research prompts researchers and research ethics reviewers to consider whether a project’s recruitment strategy could be a source of risk. Undermining the self-worth of potential participants is a formal of risk. Shaming Santa is also probably a good way to get yourself on the naughty list. Whatever your religious, spiritual or scientific beliefs, the AHRECS team wishes you a safe and happy holiday season. We will continue working over the holiday period. Friday afternoon’s funny – Quick make the bed

Research can create reams of information and documents that need to be retained. Often this will be for years and for some projects a decade or more. In these days where space is precious there may be a temptation to store them outside of a research institution, perhaps even at home. Good practice probably isn’t to use the boxed documents as your bed. In most cases the regulator, institution, monitor or even a solicitor can compel the provision or at least inspection of the stored documents. Institutions will need to know what documents are being stored offsite and be able to easily access them. This humorous Don Mayne cartoon depicts what you are risking if you use the stored documents as furniture.

Friday afternoon’s funny – But what do you really think of the research project?

This humorous Don Mayne cartoon shows why you should always carefully select and train the person who will be conducting your first contact or recruitment. Do they have faith in the research team, the matter under review and the project design? Do they have any unanswered questions? Is their approach intimidating or likely to unnerve potential participants? If any of these statements apply, they may not be the best person to be the first impression potential participants form of your research.
