A cartoon of gloved hands holding a syringe and drug vial in front of a line of lab animals.

(Colombia/US) NIH defunds Colombian research facility that allegedly abused monkeys – Science (Phie Jacobs | July 2023)

It is fantastic to see a major research funding body like the NIH taking serious action against an animal housing facility because of welfare and ethics concerns. While some may feel that the time taken was too long, it is important to recognise the significance of the step they took. Housing and breeding facilities in other jurisdictions should take note of the implications and consequences of failing to meet welfare and ethical expectations.

Suffering in Silence – Science (Simon Prades | March 2023)

The hard practicality of much animal research is that some animals will suffer and die.  Accomplished animal-based researchers understand and accept this.  They are a fundamental component of their chosen career.  But do we give a thought to animal technicians and junior researchers who may not have considered this when accepting a job?  This Science piece discusses the personal torment of an animal technician who genuinely cares for animals.  Institutions have a duty of care to offer support and assistance to junior research staff struggling with these matters.

A funny cartoon about the mayhem caused if kangaroos where used as Lab animals,

Friday afternoon’s funny – What’s that skip, trouble in the lab?

Kangaroos may be plentiful in Australia and many justifiably might consider them pests, but that doesn’t mean they are potential laboratory animals.  As this Don Mayne humorous cartoon depicts, awful mayhem might ensue.  Especially if a vintage Australian television show was right about how smart they are.

(Europe) The Science and Ethics of Turning Octopuses into ‘Lab Rats’ – EuroScientist (Mićo Tatalović | February 2022)

The use of octopi in animal laboratory research raises interesting opportunities, as well as significant ethical questions.  Many national animal ethics standards globally (including Australia) recognise that octopi are sentient, with complex cognitive capacity and require scientific work with them to be submitted for research ethics review by an animal ethics committee.

(US) Animal welfare organization PETA holds ‘Without Consent’ display on UF campus – Gainsville Sun (Gershon Harrell | February 2022)

Discussions about animal welfare in research can tend to evoke strident and forceful opposing positions, as highlighted by this story and the public commentary the display generated.  What is needed is calm and open discussion, based on the principles of transparency, respect, empathy and respect.

(Germany) Germany weighs whether culling excess lab animals is a crime – Science (Hinnerk Feldwisch-Drentrup | May 22)

Depending on your views on animal research and your sympathies for the challenges of animal breeding, housing and handling, this move in Germany might be viewed as something for other jurisdictions to adopt, or a scary impediment to work in this area.  It does reflect evolving community views with regards to transparency and accountability in animal-based work.

(US) Members Of University Research Committee Jointly File Lawsuit Against University Of Washington – Seattle Medium (February 2022)

For those of us in the rest of the world, we might look at this story as an example of how litigious the US is, but it can also be seen as the desperate measures an animal ethics committee sometimes have to take to get their host institution to live up to its responsibilities.  Animal welfare, good housing/handling and training aren’t cheap, but they are “the cost” of doing animal work the right way.
