BIOGRAPHY

Susanna Gorman has a wealth of experience in the area of research ethics, integrity and governance, having worked across a number of higher education institutions. She was responsible for research ethics at the University of Technology, Sydney from 1992-2012, where she was instrumental in the establishment of the UTS Human Research Ethics Committee, Biosafety Committee and Animal Care and Ethics Committee. During this period she also helped establish a network of NSW and ACT Human Research Ethics Committees. She organised the first meeting of this group at UTS in 1994. This group grew into the Australasian Ethics Network, which now holds regular ethics conferences attended by people from all around Australasia.

In 2013, Susanna was contracted to review the Human Research Ethics Committee of the Australian Catholic University. She recommended a significant number of changes to its operations, and was subsequently appointed as the Research Ethics Manager for ACU to oversee the adoption of her recommendations, including reformation of the University’s HREC and the redrafting of its ethics policies and procedures. She introduced a program of ethics training, working with academics and committee members to strengthen the university’s research ethics culture. Susanna resigned from ACU at the end of 2017.

Susanna has encouraged the ethics committees that she has worked with to adopt a positive and helpful approach to ethics, and to enter into dialogue with researchers. Since leaving ACU Susanna has undertaken consultancy work for other organisations
