About
Despite our name and our strong connections to Australia and New Zealand, for several years we have been engaging with institutions in Asia and Europe.
We have learned much from working with these organisations; we would be very happy to hear from other institutions who seek our support in their work on research ethics and research integrity.
We are keen to help organisations interested in research ethics and integrity in the Global South develop policies, procedures, practices and resources that respect local contexts. Our fees reflect the different income levels in the Global South.
AHRECS in Asia
澳大利亚和新西兰人类研究伦理咨询服务 / 澳大利亞和新西蘭人類研究倫理諮詢服務
For several years we have been working with institutions in East and South-East Asia. In 2003, Gary Allen helped the Hanoi School of Public Health in Vietnam establish its human research ethics arrangements.
Following a period as an external examiner in the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Hong Kong, Mark Israel advised the Faculty of Law there on research integrity.
In 2016, he delivered a lecture series on research ethics and integrity at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) in Tainan, National Chiao Tung University in Hsinchu, and Academia Sinica in Taipei. Mark returned to NCKU in 2017 to deliver two more lectures and workshops. This led to a publication on Transnational Policy Migration, Interdisciplinary Policy Transfer and Decolonization.
In 2017, Mark visited Beijing to run a session on authorship for the international Committee on Publication Ethics’ ChinaSeminar. While in Beijing, he presented and took part in a discussion on social research ethics hosted by the social media platform, Academic China, in collaboration with SAGE Publications.
In 2017, Mark was an invited presenter at the Ethics Review Workshop, University of Haifa.
In 2021, Mark was invited to work with the Central Asia Research Ethics (CARE) project based at Nazarbayev University in Kazakhstan, running an online seminar on ethical challenges in social research and acting as a discussant for papers on Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan.
AHRECS in Europe
AHRECS works with Simon Anderson Consulting in the United Kingdom to support organisations on research ethics and integrity. In 2021, Simon completed a project with Samaritans UK crafting research ethics processes and practices fit for a third sector organisation.
Mark Israel and Colin Thomson have provided advice to the European Research Council. Mark has been a regular member on their review panels. AHRECS also contributed to the European Commission-funded project on Promoting integrity in the use of research results in evidence-based policy (SwafS-21-2017).
